Shop Swim Caps for Training, Competition & Everyday Lap Swimming
Swim caps come in four common materials and a handful of specialty shapes for long hair, racing, kids, and team orders. The right pick comes down to material, hair length, and how often the cap meets chlorinated water.
Swim Cap Materials
-
Silicone: The most durable and popular material, thick enough to last a full season of daily swimming and gentle on hair. The standard pick for lap swimmers and masters athletes. See silicone swim caps for the widest range of colors and fits.
-
Latex: Thin, lightweight, and breathable, the most economical material and a common choice for team orders and double-capping under a racing cap. See latex swim caps for racing and bulk team blanks.
-
Lycra and Fabric: Soft cloth caps that pull on like a beanie without grabbing hair, the comfortable pick for recreational swim and aqua aerobics. Lycra does not keep hair fully dry but is the easiest cap to put on.
-
Neoprene: Insulating caps that add warmth for open water and cold-water swimming.
Swim Caps for Long Hair, Locs, and Natural Hair
Long, thick, braided, or natural hair needs extra room. Long-hair caps use a larger dome or bun-pocket shape to hold volume without pulling, and brands like SOUL CAP build extra-large silicone caps specifically for locs, braids, curls, and afros. See long hair swim caps for XL silicone and bun-pocket fits.
Racing and Competition Caps
Racers choose a low-profile silicone or thin latex cap for race day to cut a fraction of drag, and many double-cap with a latex cap under a silicone cap to smooth wrinkles. Dome-shaped racing caps give the cleanest surface for sprint events.
Kids and Team Caps
Kids' caps come in youth sizes with single-strap silicone fits and bright colors for easy visibility in a busy pool. See kids' swim caps for youth-sized fits. For teams, leagues, and swim schools, custom caps print logos, names, and team colors on silicone or latex blanks in bulk. See custom swim caps for team logo printing and personalization.
Do Swim Caps Keep Hair Dry?
A swim cap reduces how much water reaches the hair but does not keep it fully dry. The cap seals against the forehead, not the hairline behind the ears, so some water always seeps in. To keep hair drier, wet the hair first, add a little conditioner, tuck it flat, and pull a silicone cap over a latex cap.
Fit, Care, and How Long a Swim Cap Lasts
A correctly sized cap covers the hairline and ears without rolling up at the edge. To put one on, stretch it wide with both hands inside and lower it onto your head from front to back. Rinse in fresh water after every swim and dry it inside out, since chlorine and sun break down the material over time. A silicone cap lasts a full season or more of regular use; latex caps are thinner and wear out faster.
