It does keep water out. I thought it would make breathing in more difficult but I didn't notice it. That could be because I'm more relaxed, not thinking about the small amount of water gurgling in the bottom of the snorkel.
Very happy I got this and the snorkel. My posture on kick only lengths is now much better and is helphign me get my kick right.
