DIY Driftwood Wall Hanging

With summer in full swing, it's only natural to want to give your space a beachy face lift. If seashells on your coffee table isn't your thing, we've got a more subtle piece of wall art borrowed from the sea. Join us for an easy, breezy DIY driftwood wall hanging;

What you will need; driftwood, water, bleach, a scrubbing brush, plastic storage bin, yarn, scissors, twine or rope, nails and a hammer.

First things first, you'll need a piece of driftwood. You can find driftwood online if you don't have a beach nearby, but if you can, we recommend making a trip to the ocean and picking your own pieces from the sand (you know, incase you needed an excuse for a road trip).

Once you have your driftwood, you will want to sanitize it. We used a plastic storage bin and filled it with water and 5 cups of bleach. Soak the driftwood in the bleach-water for 3-5 days (note: you may need a large rock or brick to weigh the wood down). After the wood has soaked, give it a good scrub with a brush and dish soap under running water. Rinse the clean driftwood one more time and set aside to dry (this could take a few days).

Here comes the fun part.

To make the fringe, you will need the yarn of your choice and a pair of scissors. Cut about 2 feet of yarn, fold it in half and wrap it around the driftwood. Pull the open ends of the yarn through the looped end and tighten it around the driftwood. Repeat this until your driftwood is covered in fringe. You can leave the yarn strands long and the same length, or cut them at an angle like we did.

Note: we suggest ironing the unruly yarn once you have trimmed it. Put a thin towel over the yarn and iron until all of the strands are straight.

To hang your new wall art you will need twine, nails and a hammer. Wrap some twine around one end of the driftwood, tie a knot, measure the length you want and create a loop at the end of the twine (the loop is what you will hang on the nail). Repeat this step on the opposite end of the driftwood.

Nail your newest piece of art on to the wall, put on a bikini, add a tropical umbrella straw to a glass of coconut water, turn on your favorite summer playlist and soak up your beachy abode.
