Interscholastic Coach of the Month Award - August

Coaches are the backbone of any swim team and frequently the unsung heroes of an athlete’s success. They are the instructors, motivators, teachers and role models for many young athletes and swimmers. That’s why it’s important that partners with organizations like the National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association (NISCA). Every month, we recognize a different coach around the country for their tireless devotion to our sport and its athletes with our Coach of the Month Award.

This month’s Coach of the Month spotlights Norman Schueckler, a 33-year coaching veteran at Honeoye Falls-Lima Central School in Honeoye Falls, New York. Congrats!

    Name: Norman Schueckler
    School: Honeoye Falls-Lima Central School
    Hometown: Honeoye Falls, NY
    Years Coaching: 33
Biggest Team Success: Winning our first boys Sectional title in 2002 sure was special, including the fact that my son Kyle was the captain of the team.
Favorite Thing About Coaching: Every year I have coached there seems to always be multiple performances I get excited about. Win or not, it's all about the individual improvements, and they always seem to be there.
Favorite Drill for Your Team: My team always get a kick out of "The Gauntlet". The team forms two lines on either side of a lane, each with a kick board in hand. Team members take turns swimming between the two lines (including a turn) as the team makes waves with their kick boards. After swimming the gauntlet that swimmer calls out the next swimmer, till everyone has gone. While I sell the drill as practice swimming while relays in the next lanes might be diving in creating waves, the drill is just a fun early season team building function.

    Congratulations, Coach Norman!

Check back next month for September's Interscholastic Coach of the Month recipient.
