July Interscholastic Coach of the Month Award

Coaches are the backbone of any swim team. They offer motivation, support, advice, praise and criticism.

Without a swim coach, many swimmers might not have the self-discipline and determination necessary to achieve success.

For that reason, SwimOutlet.com has teamed up with the National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association (NISCA) – the organization of high school swim coaches – to celebrate a monthly SwimOutlet.com Interscholastic Coach of the Month Award.

For July, we would like to acknowledge coach Howard Schein from Urbana, Illinois who has been a dedicated coach for 14 years!

Name: Howard Schein
School: University of Illinois Laboratory High School
City: Urbana, IL
Years Coaching:
 14
Biggest Team Success: Winning Sectional Meet this year for first time ever and placing 5 swimmers into the Illinois State Meet. (Our High School only has 120 girls and Illinois High School swimming does not have "divisions" for swim teams according to school size.)
Favorite Thing About Coaching: Getting to work with and getting to know the team members, working with them toward athletic AND personal development; working with the other coaches in a way that optimizes all of our abilities and contributions.
Favorite Drill for Your Team: "Clock drill" from Frank Busch's freestyle video. Part I: Swimmer begins on one side. Non-stroking arm always extended. Raises stroking arm up in a step wise fashion till the arm is at 90 degrees to body. Then clocks arm such that elbow is back, palm is at eye level, palm facing down. Swimmer then moves arm forward into stroke, goes to stomach, catches, and pulls back to side. Then swimmer takes breath while gliding. Part II: Do Part I, BUT, as clocking arm extends, take stroke with extended arm and rotate to other side. This gives a feel for front quadrant freestyle and shoulder driven rotation. The swimmer can also insert a hip flick as the clock arm extends to emphasize a full body rotation.

Congratulations, Coach Howard!
