The story behind Pura Vida is a simple one: bracelets. After taking a multi-week post-college backpacking trip through Costa Rica, the two founders, Griffin Thall and Paul Goodman, met two people who were selling bracelets on the streets. Joaquin and Jorge, who handmade the bracelets, were discovered by Paul and Griffin. The recent grads went back to Jorge’s and Joaquin’s house to discover they were living in one room with three beds and sharing the space with many members of their family.
Happy to be of help, Paul and Griffin asked if they would make 400 bracelets to take back with them and sell them. Joaquin and Jorge were only too happy to. After placing the bracelets in a few local stores back in the United States, they quickly sold out.
The rest, as they say, is history. Paul and Griffin asked if they could make more bracelets for the high demand and Jorge and Joaquin, plus some new employees as well, have been making them ever since. When you’re buying a Pura Vida bracelet, know that each one is unique and different, for they are exquisitely handmade with loving detail. You’re also helping to clean beaches and oceans around the world. For every purchase a portion of the money is donated to One Percent for the Planet. Pura Vida means pure life in Spanish, so whatever you end up buying goes to a great cause.
