Bio: Le Clos became a global swimming superstar at the 2012 London Olympics when the relative unknown from South Africa defeated Michael Phelps by the narrowest of margins (.05 seconds) to win gold in the 200m butterfly. Phelps had not lost the event in 10 years at international meets. Prior to the Olympics, le Clos had even admitted that Phelps was an idol of his and he never imagined beating him. A few days later he picked up a gold in the 100m butterfly. Le Clos would sweep the fly events at the 2013 Worlds and was on track to do it again at the 2015 Worlds in Kazan (Phelps competed at U.S. Nationals) when Hungary’s Laszlo Cseh edged him out for the world title. What ensued as a friendly feud through the media about the Phelps-le Clos rivalry -- building the buzz towards a much-anticipated showdown in Rio. Le Clos’ father is from Mauritius and his mother is a South African native.
