        Size

        Practice opposed arm to leg walking backward and forward with alternating push pull vertical paddles or full range of motion alternating narrow figure eights movement, left arm tracks with right leg. Sideways step squats, straight arms level with surface upon squat, push paddles straight down to side thighs to stand while stepping/pushing leg out to side to straighten. Jog-kick with bottom low sitting position, vertical paddles push pull opposed to leg, forward and backward. Travelling sideways is very hard, but great workout. Lunge-walk with power backward vertical paddles and slice/relax forward paddles. Can do forward or backward lunge walks--on backward, the slice-forward paddles become the power-forward paddles, so become the vertical paddles. Start with paddles wide open for least resistance. Most important thing is not to grip these, ever. Keep loose fingers and pull or push with loose fingers or palm. You will undo all the good if you grip anything in the water. Paddles are the oldest type of aquatic rehab equipment. They used to be wooden! They are my favorite form of rehab and personal training equipment for clients and classes. Everybody loves them for strength training, not just upper body and levers but especially for core muscles. If you do not engage your core muscles, you could injure yourself. It is your engaged muscles that must create the resistance of the water which is already 12 to 44 times the resistance of air, and also withstand that resistance by contracting the opposed muscles. All your muscles will be working all the time, so pay attention to your weakest muscles and work those more sets or steps (usually core and posterior muscles, all the back muscles, including backs of shoulders and arms). Start with only ten minutes of a variety of exercises, work up slowly to 20 or 30 minutes. Do not tax your endurance if you suffer from any form of arthritis. Try to keep as much of the shoulders submerged as much as possible (will not always be possible).

        I have RA and have just begun a water therapy program.  The therapist use these paddles and I love them.  I really like the way I can increase resistance just by closing the openings a little or a lot.  I wish the handles were larger.  My arthritic hands hurt after using them for very long.  All in all, a great product.
