  • 10/12/2017 thick and sticky

    5 Review Stars By cypress

I love this mat, I have bought many cheap ones, and I am glad I spent the extra money for this, it is thicker than most I have come across and holds my hands and feet in place. Happy to have a special mat to practice on-

So, during the process of reading reviews all across the internet, which yields MANY positives but one repetitive negative, I still decided to choose the Manduka Pro mat over the competition. With that said, I'm not unhappy with the mat. It's true, the Manduka mat is slippery. I have trouble in basic positions such as the downward-dog. You physically don't slide all over the mat, and you can't actually see your hands slipping....but you feel it and are constantly re-adjusting. I half expected to experience this, but I didn't know how frustrating it would be. There are many "hacks" and reviews that state that use over time will fix this issue, so I'm absolutely not worried in the long term.
The mat itself is great. A very good thickness that I'm comfortable with that provides support and cushion when needed but also allows me to feel connected to the ground. The mat does not move or slip as I'm changing positions and has handled well with any sweat (not a lot). I've read this mat is not appropriate for hot yoga, so I wouldn't recommend it for that use.
Even though I'm frustrated with my mat in the present I look forward to when the slippage wears off and I'm able to get good grip and years of usage out of it. The reason for my 3 stars is that no matter how much potential a mat has, for someone who practices yoga, I don't believe we should have to sacrifice weeks/months of our practice to break a mat in. They either need to fix this during the manufacturing process or find a way to counter act the result of the manufacturing process before it reaches consumers :) Best of luck!

I have the Manduka ProLite mat which it is perfect for visiting my local studio. When I decided to create a full-time yoga nook in my living room I knew I wanted to splurge on the Pro mat. It is worth every penny and YogaOutlet offers sweet deals to make it cost-effective. The Pro is heavy, dense, and larger making it ideal for home practice or at a studio where you can store your mat - I can't imagine running around public transit with this on your back. What I love about Manduka mats is that they are ready to use right away - no smells and no strange residue. I do find my new Pro mat less sticky than my two year old ProLite but I just need to be patient to break it in. No mat is perfect but you cannot go wrong with this one!

Great mat, padded enough to be easy on the knees, but not so padded that balance poses are difficult.  My only complaint about this mat is that the slippery film doesn't want to come off easily.  I did the vinegar rinse on it as instructed and am now using it with regularity to get the film off. The first time I used it I was reminded of a Slip & Slide. Also, this mat is seven pounds so I recommend getting a mat bag or sling.

This mat is everything that Manduka promises.  I love everything about it.  The length, the color and the comfort.  I look forward to many years of practice with this mat.

  • 9/26/2013 Super Comfy

    4 Review Stars By BooJoJo

After seeing my yoga teacher's Manduka and hearing her give a glowing review, I looked at my thin, small yoga mat that needed extra padding. I jumped on board and received my new Manduka within 2 days. Ample cushioned area for poses gives great comfort to sensitive areas of the body (e.g., ankles, hips). Grips the floor; however, my hands still slide when doing downward dog. Tried flipping the mat and that worked better (each side has a different texture).

    5 Review Stars By Jackie

I needed a new mat and wanted to try another brand. I love the texture and depth of this mat. I teach gentle yoga and needed a mat with a thick base. It was a bit more expensive but a great sale price and worth it. My students highly approved!  I will get many years out of this.

  • 1/20/2017 LOVE THIS MAT!

    5 Review Stars By Trez

I read numerous reviews about this mat, & many others, as they are not cheap & I wanted to make a good decision & not have to hassle with a return. I finally ordered the Pro & am so very happy I did! It is awesome! Some of the previous reviewers commented on the smell & the weight. When I opened the packaging there was a slight newish smell. I just hung it over my bannister for a couple days to air out a little. I didn't wash it first, I didn't scrub it first, I used it first! No noticeable smell. Yes, it is heavier than my first cheaper mat, but a good wide sling makes portability a breeze. If any yogi is on the fence about this mat, just order it! You'll be glad you did! :)

5 Review Stars By Julia T

Bought it as a birthday gift and mom loves it. We're a bony family so the thickness of this mat is perfect for poses on knees and elbows. No towel cushion necessary. Can't say much about the longevity because we just got it, but I have high hopes that the grip will increase over time like everyone else says. Can say for sure that the Lulu Lemon mats don't stay sticky although they do a good job of absorbing sweat...but I digress

  • 2/6/2017 Very Disappointed in the Very Expensive Manduka Pro Mat

1 Review Stars By Oly Yogi

Firstly, when you get the mat, the instructions are that you need to give it a salt scrub to reduce how slippery it is. This is messy and inconvenient.  My question is: "why can't they do this at the factory instead of making the customer treat the mat.  It is very expensive."

Secondly, the mat is slippery, even before getting sweaty.. I normal downward dog, the hands slowly slip away, which makes it hard to concentrate on relaxing.

I read reviews that said this mat had slippage issues but was hoping it wasn't so bad.
Very, very disappointing at any price, but this one is $128... wow

Honestly, my $10 mat works far, far better.

I am going to return it and get a refund.

Founded at the turn of the millennium, Manduka® has always been a company that put its customers and the environment above all else. Peter Sterios, an architect turned yogi, stumbled upon a simple, yet elegantly created mat that completely revolutionized the way he practiced yoga. This revelation was the inspiration for the whole Manduka yoga line.

Sterios' creation would not have been possible without the help of his generous yoga teachers. As a form of appreciation he sent a mat to many of the yoga teachers he admired including Rod Stryker, Erich Schiffmann, Victor Van Kooten, Angela Farmer, Rodney Yee, and Shiva Rea. As a traditional practice in yoga, these teachers shared these mats with their students and from there the word spread.

Manduka, derived from the Hatha Yoga Pradipika pose, Mandukasana, is named as a tribute to Sterios' yoga mentor, Shandor Remete. The delight he took in hearing the word roll of his tongue helped him solidify the faith he had in his new company. From there the joy has spread to over 35 countries worldwide.

More than anything though, Manduka's commitment to quality and sustainability is unmatched in the yoga industry. Every detail and every decision is made with sustainability in mind. Manduka wants their customers to not only find peace with themselves, but their environment as well. Products like the Manduka eKO Lite Yoga mat, the eQua Hot Yoga Towel, demonstrate just how committed they are to sustainability.

Manduka understands that yogis of all levels come from diverse backgrounds, but they all share similar core values. Beyond just being eco-friendly, is the spirit and wisdom that yoga teachers and their students emanate. Yoga is more than just exercise on a mat, it's a way of life. Manduka embraces this idea and lets it shine through all their yoga products.
