How to Care for Boardshorts

March 03, 2014

How well you take care of your swim gear is directly related to how long and how well it performs. Boardshorts are no different; the comfort, function, performance and longevity of your shorts is contingent upon how you care for them. While every designer's shorts are made differently, most boardshorts benefit from the same kind of maintenance. Below are some easy ways to make sure you get the best life out of your boardshorts.

Post-Swim

      • Change in a clean area away from sand or dirt; these particles could nick or tear the fabric.
      • Always rinse your shorts with fresh water – this helps rinse out any potentially harmful chemicals from chlorine or leftover salt water that could discolor the fabric.
      • Turn your shorts inside out when drying to keep the color intact.
      • Hang your shorts to dry on a thick, sturdy wooden or plastic hanger to dry out of the sun to prevent any discoloration.
      • If you shorts get stiff, rinse them in warm water for a few hours and hang or flat dry.

Washing

      • Turn your shorts inside out to keep the color intact.
      • Don't wash your boardshorts in a washing machine – check the label and follow those specific instructions; if the shorts are washer friendly, use your washer's delicate or hand wash setting for the least rough cycle.
Note: Do NOT use hot water! This could compromise the integrity and aesthetics of your boardshorts.
      • Use biodegradable, mild detergent that cleans, conditions and removes any salt, chlorine, odors and organic residues that will preserve your gear for an extended use.
Note: Never use harsh, everyday detergents that could strip your shorts of their performance qualities.

Drying

      • Turn your shorts inside out when drying to keep the color intact.
      • Steer clear of dryers! If the tag on your shorts permits machine drying, tumble dry on the lowest setting to prevent any discoloration or wear and tear.
      • Hang your shorts to dry on a thick, sturdy wooden or plastic hanger to dry out of the sun to prevent any discoloration.

General Care

      • Store in a dry, cool place – and make sure you're boardshorts are dry, too!
      • Keep sharp objects away from your shorts to prevent and tears or snags.
      • Avoid contact with oil, gasoline, aerosols or chemical solvents as this will ruin boardshort fabric.
      • Try not to put your shorts back on when they're still wet – this can compromise the integrity of any Spandex material.

These simple, easy-to-follow tips can significantly increase the lifespan and appearance of your boardshorts. While purchasing high-quality, high-performing boardshorts can break the bank, not only will you notice a difference, but they'll be in your closet much longer than less expensive ones, saving you money over time. The quality and care you put into your shorts will give you a beautiful boardshorts that will last longer than one summer surf session.
