    Training for the Santa Rosa 70.3 Triathlon: Core Essentials

    It has been just over a month since I started training for the Ironman Santa Rosa 70.3 and besides making it to the pool two mornings a week in freezing temperatures, wind and rain (I am pretty proud of myself if you couldn't tell) I have also layered in to my training two runs during the week. One a short and sweet 5km dash along the beaches on a weekday morning, and the second a longer run of varying distances in the hills around Santa Cruz on the weekend.

    Having gone from 0 to 4 training sessions a week I am noticing my fitness finally pick up as well as my endurance. One of the other things I have noticed is that my posture, both in the water and out on a run, is causing a couple of little pain points in my hip flexor and my neck.

    Around 4 years ago I ran a half marathon in Illinois in two hours and six minutes, which is my second fastest time for that distance. The thing is I really didn't follow any type of run training program or even run too many long distances leading up to the race. I was, however, consistantly going to Crossfit where I had developed a strong core and high level of cardio through both weights and interval training.

    Having been fairly inactive for the past year, since I moved to California, I have lost a lot of that core strength. I find myself sagging in the pool, with less power in my kick, and on the run slouching or leaning over to one side when I am a little bit tired. So I decided to go back to Crossfit and signed myself up for an initial three months after a torturing free class that reminded me I have a lot of work to do over the next four months. 

    Crossfit is not for everyone but I am a strong believer that a bit of strength training, especially for your core, is essential for getting through any endurance race. When you think of how you have to engage your core to keep a strong stroke and kick, position on the bike or posture on the run, it just makes sense to train that part of your body as well, outside of those diciplines. It also gives you a break from those long, and sometimes, lonely training sessions because you get to interact with other people who can push you a little bit further than you thought you could go, just by struggling alongside with you, but never giving up and encouraging you at the same time.
