Tech Suits on Deck in Omaha

As the web’s most popular swim shop, we’re always keeping an eye on the tech suits on deck during major swim meets. It’s been no different at the Swim Trials this week, where we’ve been studiously counting the various suit brands and suit styles for every final.

Without a doubt, the big three dominate the semifinals and finals each night with the Speedo LZR X, TYR Avictor and Arena’s Carbon family of suits visible throughout the evening sessions.

All three brands are partners with USA Swimming and the three have a huge retail space in the Aqua Zone just steps away from the competition arena.

It’s been interesting to note the general lack of red, white & blue colorways during Trials -- with those patriotic suits most likely coming out for national pride during the Games next month in Rio.

Even Michael Phelps, whose signature MP brand, which features a stars & stripes suit, has been wearing his yellow/black MP Xpresso this week.

There are a few exceptions. Even the patriotic type, Missy Franklin has been wearing a bright red, blue Speedo suit during her races.

But a lot of Speedo’s top swimmers like Ryan Lochte and Katie Ledecky are still sticking with the traditional black with the subtle logo color. A few are going with Speedo’s all-purple colorway.

Dolfin, which for many years didn’t have an elite tech suit, also has a purple version for their Titanium and Melanie Margalis, who qualified for Rio in the 200m IM, has called it her lucky purple.

The adidas adizero XVI is being worn by Michael Andrew and Allison Schmitt. While it’s not a big number of swimmers wearing the suit, when it makes an appearance on deck, it’s shiny color and pink accents certainly stands out.

One brand that has had quite a few swimmers has been Mizuno. Their suit is a black front, blue back similar to some of Arena’s color options but it’s not available at retail in the U.S.
