Five Hidden Beaches You'll Love

April 14, 2016 | By

The irony of the hidden beach is that once people discover and write about it, it’s no longer a hidden beach. That’s why we’re not calling it our “secret beaches” list, because that’s something we wouldn’t share with you on our blog! ;)

But no matter, these hidden beaches are tough to find, off the beaten path and generally a joy to explore once you find them! Here’s our top five in no particular order. Tell us your favorite hidden beach in the comments!

1) Deia, Spain

This bucolic town on the Spanish island of Mallorca is just up the hill from a magnificent little beach that can only be reached on foot or bumpy dirt road with no parking. The terrain is just too rugged and steep. Park just outside of town on the main street and ask any local for Cala Deia; they’ll point you down the dirt path! Don’t forget anything in your car, you won’t want to walk back up.

2) Green Beach, Vieques, P.R.

Green Beach is located on the part of this Puerto Rican island that was once a U.S. Naval Bombing Range before being closed in 2003 – so of course it’s a bit out of the way. The island has since kept that part of the island undeveloped and you need to cross over the old airport taxiways that are now overgrown. Once you get there you find a beautiful crescent shaped beach with no amenities. But nothing is needed but the sun!

3) Gasparilla Island State Park, Florida

There are not many hidden beaches in Florida where beach-going is religion but Gasparilla Island Park is at the end of a skinny barrier island in Southwest Florida after crossing over the Boca Grande toll bridge. Pass through the cute and historic town of Boca Grande and park by the lighthouse. While you won’t be alone at this popular beach, you will certainly be worry-free

4) Natural Reserve Zingaro, Sicily, Italy

Sicily might be more famous for its antiquities but in the northwest corner of the island and just outside the quaint seaside town of Scopello, you can park at the end of the road and walk into Zingaro Reserve. The path skirts the cliffs. Pop down any of the small side trails to find that hidden gem of solitude.

5) Davenport Beach, Davenport, California

When you think of Santa Cruz county, chances are you think of California's iconic Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk.  Travel just 10 miles north of Santa Cruz on Highway 1 and you'll discover tons of hidden gems off the beaten path, but our favorite is Davenport Beach. Park in the dirt lot off the side of the road and hike down the cliffside trail to a secluded oasis.
