If you have small hands the Medium sized ones will be to big. I recomend getting the small ones if you're under 13 (more or less).

my son is a nationals level swimmer and he uses this paddles in two ways. With all hoses in places than keep the paddle attached to the hand and taking out the hose that goes on wrist to swim and control hand position keep paddle in position. if you do not enter a hand in rigth way, the paddle is going to be out of the hand.

I've been using the paddles to increase upper body strength and to work on refining my stroke. These are PERFECT for that use. I would order a size smaller...they run a little big. An excellent product!
