Maybe I'm smaller now, but my Pearl Izumi mediums fit better than the medium 2XUs...but I like these waaaay better than PI. The padding is just enough. They are smooth, and low-riding, which was really comfortable (especially that they don't gather/bunch up when you are in the aero-position. I just wore these in an olympic distance tri, in Florida (HOT) and although they feel thicker (in some sections the paneling is double), they felt terrific. I was worried they'd feel hot, but it wasn't a problem at all. The padding is very soft and comfortable. I love 'em!
