Not so familiar with the beach/board shorts distinction. These shorts are made out of canvassy material, cool, and yes, great for sitting on the sand. So these don't go in the water but in a hot bikram yoga room which is comparable to beach conditions so they're fine there. They're airy and move well.

For being an extra large they are very small. I am unable to wear them. Very disappointed.
