This is more of a lifesaving vest than for swimming. The foam is only on the front of the vest, so the child is forced onto his back. There's another large piece of foam that floats behind the head to keep them aloft and the head out of the water. It seems to be ok once the kid gets used to it, but it's definitely bulky. This is not for swim lessons. It is probably better than floaty arms, though.
On my 27-lb kid, who is 28 months old, it seems long. The top clip hits him in the chin, which bothers him. Maybe when he's taller it will fit better. He's a small, skinny kid for his age, so I thought this would be perfect. This would work better if it had foam all the way around the vest and if the foam was thinner.
The leg straps are very long. When I fit them to him, the extra length drags on the ground and he trips over it. Not sure what they were thinking making it that long. An adult would barely need the length they provided.
Overall, though, it's not a bad experience in the water and he doesn't mind wearing it, which is unusual. It must be comfortable with nothing that digs into him. He doesn't complain anything hurts. So it's well made in that regard. It dries fast, too.
