    Festival Fashions 2015

With summer on the horizon, we've got music festivals on our mind. Nothing says summer like road trips to the desert with your besties, bohemian fringe and bikinis in toll-- right? Before you get swept away to your musical oasis, we're talking festival fashions from SwimOutlet.com. Whether you're going to a local music in the park event, or making the infamous trek to Indio, we've got you covered (literally).

There are three key components when packing for festival fun; 1) prints and crochet are an endless love affair 2) the more fringe the better 3) keep cool, and look cooler

    Nine times out of ten, a festival getaway typically involves three (or more...) outfits, an unnecessary amount of accessories, and swimsuits for post-concert pool parties. Here's what we're packing;

Interscholastic Coach of the Month Award - March

Coaches are the backbone of any swim team and frequently the unsung heroes of an athlete’s success. They are the instructors, motivators, teachers and role models for many young athletes and swimmers. That’s why it’s important that SwimOutlet.com partners with organizations like the National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association (NISCA). Every month, we recognize a different coach around the country for their tireless devotion to our sport and its athletes with our SwimOutlet.com Coach of the Month Award.

This month’s SwimOutlet.com Coach of the Month spotlights Russ Ingold, a 21-year coaching veteran at Blue Valley Southwest in Overland Park, KS. Congrats!

    Name: Russ Ingold

    School: Blue Valley Southwest

    City: Overland Park, Kansas

    Years Coaching: 21 years.

Biggest Team Success: Helping to bring the first state championship to Blue Valley Southwest High School. The 2013 Girls team was the first team state championship in the school’s short 3 year history, and then repeat in 2014.

Favorite thing about Coaching: This is a hard question to answer and I hope this doesn’t sound too corny because I’ve been fortunate to work with some very talented athletes, league champs, state champs, high school all-Americans, a few that went on to dive at D1 colleges,  and even one that made the Olympic Trials finals. But my favorite things about coaching is, having that high school kid walk on the pool deck for the first time ever and have them say, “I want to try diving.” Then getting them to believe that they can do things that they never thought they could ever do, and then watch them do it.

Favorite Drill: We play a game called Jump or Dive. It’s a game that helps to teach balance on a forward take off. The diver does a front approach and as they come down from their hurdle step the coach yells out jump or dive. The object of the diver is to listen and either go in the water feet first or hands first, depending on what was called. If the diver has their weight on their heels it is hard to rotate to go in head first. If they are leaning forward they will have too much rotation and go in head first.

    Congratulations, Coach Russ!

Check back next month for April's SwimOutlet.com Interscholastic Coach of the Month recipient.

Brand Q&A: Catching up with TYR

TYR recently launched their latest Avictor tech suit in their line-up to much critical acclaim. The suit received straight A’s in our SwimOutlet.com 2015 Tech Suit Reviews and has made an impression for its colorful style. But TYR is more than just a top-of-the-line tech suit. We caught up with TYR’s media rep Erika Amandola on some of the latest TYR developments.

SwimOutlet.com Blog: The TYR Avictor is your new statement suit, tell us a little bit about the product development and characteristics of the suit?

Erika Amandola: This suit has been a pursuit of ingenuity two years in the making. Manufactured in the United States, it stands alone from so many other suits on the market, and that is something we as an American based company, are very proud of. From the start we were dedicated to utilizing the latest technology in both materials and manufacturing. Now fully developed, the suit consists of three major advancements. The first, Hydrosphere Technology, allows swimmers to maintain a position higher above the water, reducing drag and adding speed. The second, Speed Dry Fabrication, enables swimmers to feel lighter and dry faster. Finally, Super Flex Bonding, conforms to the swimmer’s body to provide a durable, 360 degree stretch.

    20 Things Only Swimmers Understand

Swimming isn't just a sport, it's a lifestyle. From the outside looking in you can’t understand it, and from the inside looking out you can’t describe it.

If there's one thing we love about swimming, it's the unspoken bond you have with other swimmers worldwide. They don't just accept you for your weird (and sometimes questionable) devotion, they understand it. Whether it's excitement, dread, nerves, frustrations, joy, exhaustion, victories or losses-- swimmers just get it.

    Here are 20 things only swimmers understand;

    1. Going to school after a hard morning practice is the worst thing in the world.

    2. There's never a wrong time for pizza.

Top Running Shoes Compared - The Shoemaker Review

by Jarrod Shoemaker, 2008 Olympic Triathlete

The first thing to know about shoes: picking shoes is a very personal decision. What your friend or brother likes does not mean it will work for you. SwimOutlet.com sent me 4 pairs of shoes to compare for a 2015 Spring Show Review – the Saucony Kinvara 5, the Mizuno Wave Rider 18, the Asics Gel Cumulus 16 and the Altra The One. The first three are cushioned shoes for daily training, and the last one is a tempo or racing shoe.

It is important to check the soles of your shoes and see when they become worn down, an old pair of shoes can actually cause injuries. One way to check is to put your hand into your shoe and press on the midfoot and forefoot and see if there is any cushion left. If the shoe is dead you will feel that the cushioning has been compressed and it will feel hard. Once you have pressed into a new shoe and an old shoe, it is pretty easy to tell the difference between the two.

Most shoes should last 300-400 miles. So let’s say you run 3-4 miles per day – that means your shoes would last 100 days, or about 3-4 months. But each person wears shoes differently depending on how they land. Make sure that you are not wearing your shoes too long, or even better is to find two pairs of shoes you like and alternate days running in them. This will make the shoes last a bit longer, as it will allow the cushioning to rebound a bit before you run in them again.

One piece of advice is to look at the bottom of your old shoes and see where you are landing. Heel? Midfoot? Forefoot? It is good to check this out on each pair of shoes you wear through. People don’t do that enough. The wear on your shoe tells you a lot about your gait and how your foot lands.

Onto the specific shoes and remember that picking shoes is personal. These shoes are all well-built shoes and your feet will enjoy any of them.

"Touch the Wall" Movie Review: More Than a Swimming Documentary

Touch the Wall, the documentary that shadows Missy Franklin and Kara Lynn Joyce during their preparations for the 2012 London Games premiered last November to a packed theater in Franklin’s native Denver.

Since then, the movie has been playing in theaters and community centers across the country, hosted mostly by swim teams before the scheduled DVD launch in May.

Some of us here at SwimOutlet had the chance to preview the movie during the documentary’s New York premiere just before Thanksgiving.

Top Waterproof MP3 Players Compared by Zach Kent of @iSwimWithIssues

    By Zach Kent, @iSwimWithIssues

Hey swimmers, Zach Kent here from @iSwimWithIssues! This is my very first review and I have the pleasure of reviewing some of my favorite items—Waterproof MP3 players. It’s often difficult to mindlessly swim for hours on end listening solely to the “swoosh” of the water. Don’t get me wrong, I love that sound, but sometimes a little music can help you go a long way. Oh, and it’s also useful for those times when you want tune out your coach. (I’m not suggesting doing that—it will only end with a long butterfly set.)

Below are the MP3’s that I have had the pleasure of testing out, with my favorite Waterproof MP3’s towards the top. Understand that a waterproof MP3 might vary based on your stroke and what preference you may have towards placement of the MP3, so I recommend reading all of the reviews to see which one is the best pick for you. All of these are great options but there might be some things in particular that suit your needs.

Testing Swim.com with the Pebble Watch

By Jarrod Shoemaker, 2008 Olympic Triathlete

One of the newest innovations in swim training are swim watches. A few years ago, Garmin was the leading swim watch to track your open water swimming, but now there are several swim watches that will record data, while you swim in a pool.

SwimOutlet.com’s sister company Swim.com launched earlier this year with a training platform that is geared entirely towards using swim data to help athletes improve. The other training sites on the market are built towards multisport and are not efficient at analyzing data from swim watches. It is easy to tally distances, but nothing beyond that.

Swim.com has a few other great assets including local pool and club databases and social media connections. The site has been built to not only help swimmers improve, but also to allow swimmers to compare against other swimmers at their pools and in their circle of friends. This kind of social sharing has become especially popular in sports like running and cycling. These attributes are great to help motivate, improve and even create new training groups.

Top Swim Snorkels Compared - The Stupp Training Review

By Julie Stupp, Olympic Trials Finalist

Swimming with a snorkel can be very beneficial to pool and open water swimmers of all ages and abilities, as well as triathletes. SwimOutlet.com has quite a few different snorkel options and products to choose from.

In order to help you hone in on the right snorkel for your holiday shopping, I have reviewed five different brands and they have all left me with very little air to train!

The three major benefits of training with a snorkel are: 1) an increased lung capacity; 2) an improved technique with the ability to monitor your own strokes and; 3) being able to enjoy the underwater view for extended periods of time.

9 Reasons We're Thankful for Swimming

As swimmers, we dedicate our whole lives to the sport. More times than not, heading to practice seems like a daily chore wedged into our routines. Swimming is the epitome of a love-hate relationship—one day you’re dreading it, the next day you’re excited to dive in (pun intended). Most swimmers will spend at least a fourth of their day swimming, talking about swimming or thinking about swimming—but what keeps us coming back?

    In honor of the holiday season, we can’t help but feel a little extra thankful for the sport that keeps our lives afloat (literally). Here are the top 9 reasons why we are thankful for swimming;

The Ins and Outs of Open Water Swim Caps

Swim caps make perfect stocking stuffers! Easy to wrap, affordable with styles and designs for all types of swimmers. We asked our in-house triathlon expert Jarrod Shoemaker to break down the different swim cap options for open water swimmers.

By Jarrod Shoemaker, 2008 Olympic triathlete

There are quite a few types of swim caps on the market, and quite a few different varieties. This article specifically focuses on which types of caps are good for open water swimming.

We can rule out a few caps, such as kids fun swim caps and lycra caps (Unless you are racing lifeguard races in which case lycra caps are the norm). Lycra caps allow water to pass through them easily, they are not bad per se, but do not keep your hair dry and are not as fast as latex, silicone or neoprene caps.

Most races use latex caps as they are cheaper for the races to produce, so if you are racing triathlons or open water swimming event, you most likely have used a latex cap. Most competitive swimmers, like those at the Olympics are using silicone caps, since they are a bit more sturdy, and more hydrodynamic. I have a couple latex caps, silicone caps and neoprene caps that I take with me to open water swims or races so I can use the correct cap depending on water temperature.

Fall & Winter is a great time for Swim Classes!

By United States Lifesaving Association, a SwimOutlet.com partner

The United States Lifesaving Association reminds all of us this fall – especially parents – that it is always a good time for swim lessons! Indoor swim classes are great for a winter activity.

As the cooler season approaches in northern climates, there may be less outdoor water activity, but it’s a great time to get kids to the pool to teach them to swim. Learning to swim is the first defense against drowning. Teach children to swim at an early age. Children who are not taught when they are very young tend to avoid swim instruction as they age, often due to embarrassment.
