Michael Andrew: What's In My Bag

    By Michael Andrew

When I get ready for a competition its imperative I have everything I need to get the job done as best I can. I always love packing for a swim meet. Although what goes in my bag each time doesn’t change, it simply means it’s almost time to go race. And I love to race. Of everything in my bag, my favorite piece is by far the Adizero XVI suit.

    Journey to Omaha: Part 1

By Andrew Saeta, 2008 & 2012 Olympic Trials Competitor

Editor’s Note: Most general sports fans know the U.S. Olympic Trials as the event where Olympic stars qualify for the Olympic team and have one final preparation for the upcoming Games. But for many elite swimmers, just reaching the 2016 Olympic Trials is the goal of a lifetime. We caught up with one swimmer hoping to make the cut-off time to compete in Omaha, this summer. Here’s his story and his challenge!

In March of 2013, I took the last stroke of my collegiate career as the anchor for Stanford’s 400 Freestyle Relay at the NCAA Championships in Indianapolis. That last stroke represented the end of an era for me – one that lasted 15 years where I spent thousands of miles staring at the black line at the bottom of the pool. Although the moment was bittersweet by any standard, I was excited to hang up my swim suit in exchange for a dress suit, as I began my professional career in the financial industry.

Four Tips for Your First Triathlon of the Season

The arrival of spring marks the kickoff for many triathletes to start racing after a few months of down time. If you’re preparing for your first triathlon of the year, here are a few tips to consider before toeing the line of your first race.

    Come Prepared

Hopefully you’ve done enough training to ensure you’re fit enough to finish your race. While your physical condition is the most important component to performing well on race day, it’s also important to make sure you’re comfortable using all the gear you’ll need on race day. If you do most of your swim training in a pool, try to work in a few open water swims wearing your wetsuit to get used to the sensation. Practice cycling and running in whatever you plan to wear on race day. The idea here is to be as comfortable and confident as possible with your gear. And remember, never use anything new on race day.

On Deck: Q&A with Michael Andrew

    with Michael Andrew

SwimOutlet Blog: Hey Michael, tell us a little about your upcoming schedule for the next few months heading into U.S. Olympic Trials?

Michael Amdrew: My schedule leading into trials is a really exciting one, which some would call crazy! I've been invited to compete at the Inaugural TYR Derby Pro Shootout last week in April (which I'm so excited for) and then we will take some time to continue preparing for trials. Beginning of June we expect to be in Europe for a few competitions including the Mare Nostrum series before it’s go time for Trials!!!

SwimOutlet Blog: What have you been focusing on at this point in your training cycle?

Michael Andrew: The main things we've been working on in my training have been my starts, turns & under waters, my back half (endurance to finish a race), and just sharpening everything up as much as we can!

On Deck: Q&A with Tony Azevedo

    with Tony Azevedo

SwimOutlet Blog: How have the Olympic preparations been going?  It must have been nice not to have to qualify at the Olympic Qualifier this past month in Italy?

Tony Azevedo: It was amazing that we were able to qualify at the Pan American Games like all previous years. It has given us nine solid months to prepare ourselves mentally and physically, as well. We have been training very hard. Since we are the only team that has spent the entire time together we will have an edge training-wise. I think this has been some of the hardest trainings of my life.

SwimOutlet Blog: You'll be a five-time Olympian when you get to Rio this summer. That sounds pretty special, doesn't it?

Tony Azevedo: When all is said and done I will be able to look back and relish in my accomplishments, but today and the past 20 years has been about one thing and one thing only and that is winning a Gold Medal. I would easily trade in my past four Olympics for one Gold Medal.

On Deck: Q&A with Haley Anderson

    with Haley Anderson

SwimOutlet Blog: Hey Haley, how’s it feel to be in the Olympic year, just 6 months away from Rio – especially since you’ve already qualified?

Haley Anderson: It's crazy that we are already four months out! This year has really flown by! Right now we are in the thick of training and since I have already qualified it means I can really put my focus on Rio and not have to worry about anything in between. Makes the training plan a bit easier to map out.

SwimOutlet Blog: This won’t be your first rodeo, you had that great silver medal in London – so is the approach different for you in 2016 given your experience?

Haley Anderson: London was such a crazy whirlwind that I really had no time to take a breather and enjoy the journey. Now this go around I'm really making sure I am enjoying the process and the journey and taking time to be grateful for everything.

On Deck: Q&A with Cammile Adams

    with Cammile Adams

SwimOutlet Blog: What is the current focus of your training with just a few months (weeks really) until Trials? And how are you making sure that you peak at just the right time this summer?

Cammile Adams: I am focused a lot on my stroke and race pace. I am still doing a lot of yardage since I swim more distance related events.

SwimOutlet Blog: What are some of the keys in your dryland training outside the pool?

Cammile Adams: I still am lifting 3 times a week. I think some of my favorite exercises for young swimmers are some of the exercises I do on a daily basis. For example, different shoulder rehab can keep all swimmers, regardless of age, shoulders healthy. I also do a lot of core work and abs. I think lots of core exercises transfer well into the water.

Using Video Analysis to Improve My Turn

    By Michael Andrew

After racing Cody Miller in the 100 Breaststroke (yards) and breaking the National Age Group Record in a time of 51.71 at the AESC Elite Pro Am in Oklahoma, Doc Brent Rushall (the originator & creator of USRPT) reviewed the race footage and noticed my extremely slow turns compared to Cody’s and other top breaststrokers in my heat.

12 Thoughts Swimmers Have While On the Blocks

We've all been there: the swimming jitters. You know what we're talking about-- those pre-race rituals where you give yourself a pep talk while sizing up the competition, splash yourself with water and then nervously catch a glimpse of coach from the other end of the pool.

But what actually goes through a swimmer's mind when they're standing up on the block, in front of the cheering crowds, waiting anxiously for the cue from the referee to dive in?

Cammile Adams: Planning My 2016 Season

    by Cammile Adams, 2012 Olympian

What a year already…how is it already February? Anyone else feeling this way, too? Already this year, I’ve competed at the Arena Pro Series in Austin and got some great ideas about where I am in my training, as well as what I need to continue to work on leading into trials and hopefully Rio. After Austin, I headed out to Chula Vista, California for a little over a week with the rest of the SwimMAC crew for a training camp in sunny SoCal.

Top Recovery Aids Compared - The Stupp Training Review

By Julie Stupp, Olympic Trials Finalist

Recovery, ahhh the word sounds so nice and relaxing, right? In reality, recovery can be the hardest aspect of training for some athletes. To be an elite athlete in any discipline, recovery is almost more important than the daily grind. Actively recovering after workouts can include a range of activities such as a massage, special nutrition, physical therapy, yoga, sleeping, stretching and foam rolling. If you don’t properly take care of your body, injuries can creep up and sideline a season’s worth of work and – worst case scenario – racing.

Moving Along On The Journey To Rio

Last year on August 1st I broke my collarbone and it changed all of my goals and expectations for the remainder of the season. But since December, I have been cleared from PT and have no restrictions (except try not to crash and land on your shoulder for a few more months!), I have turned the tables to 2016 and our final Olympic qualifier which is May 14 in Yokohama, Japan.
