Great product! This will really help me in my training and races! It's hard to hear during the freestyle stroke but when you're stopped at the wall or underwater it is clear as day.

This device only has a few problems.
    1) the pulse reading is not accurate
    2) it is impossible to hear the device while moving through the water
    3) it pulls the goggles' strap out so far from the face so that water comes in
    4) the voice is so unclear that it is difficult to understand even if you can hear it.
Other than those few issues, it is perfect. Well, it would be nice if you could use the USB connection to download the pulse information. But you can't. Basically, it is a worthless device.

It does what it claims. It took a while to get used to it but it's fine now.

As you may have read with other reviews, the pulse is very accurate. Make sure the clip is oriented on the ear the right way (sensor is on the outside of the lobe, which limits the amount of ambient light entering the sensor). And surprisingly, the pressure from the clip never bothered my ear or felt annoying.
I give it 4 stars because of 1) I had to wear it under my swim cap so it pressed against my cheek firmly so I could hear well; 2) the sound transmits very good underwater, but not well out of water among ambient noise of splashing water and pool noise. Therefore, I found myself pausing or coordinating my stroke so my ear would be underwater during the announcement.
The device is very sleek, but I found that when I wore it on my right side, my right shoulder brushed against it, which was only distracting (it never got knocked off or even out of place).

I can't wait for future enhancements of this product. Kudos to the engineers at Finis.

    1.  The voice annunciation was difficult to understand.  Cause, IMO, male voice - too low in frequency and too many words spoken in too short a time.  For example, "one hundred twenty-seven" becomes clipped like "one hundred twe ven".  Solution, IMO, use clear female voice and say digits only - "one two seven", or "zero nine five" and so on.  The word "hundred" is unnecessary and hurts clarification of the other numbers.
    2.  It was not accurate with a standard deviation of approximately 20 beats per  minute when following the user instructions.  I tried other variations left vs right, clip sensor inside vs outside, sunny side vs shady side, different sample intervals, and even while motionless, comparing manual timing on a clock to the AquaPulse - it still was sadly inaccurate.  It was totally useless to try to determine, let alone influence, heart rate.

Once these problems are solved, I will gladly try it again.

I bought this for my husband for Christmas and he really likes it. His Master Swim group did a "big swim" this weekend and he said it was great for monitoring his heart rate and pacing his swim. Swim Outlet's price was SO much better than other sites (for the same product!) I'm so glad I checked.

I use this when I swim, drill and train. It's light and I can't even tell that it's there. I personally don't have an issue with it, but a friend of mine that has used it has a harder time hearing it. With it having to be on your right side and working better when under water, if you are a right side breather you may miss the announcement of heartrate. I just breathe left side and it's fine. Every now and then I miss it, when it's announcing, but I just keep it at every ten seconds so even if I miss it occasionally, I get it enough.

I have a couple of congenital heart problems that were just diagnosed. The cardiologist said to swim with a monitor.  I've been using this product for 3 weeks with great results.  It's light, comfortable and so far accurate.  It really helps me to continue to swim my mile safely!

I currently attempt to keep my heart rate within a specific range. This makes it SO much easier. It's nice to hear the rate while I'm swimming instead of just after I've finished - it lets me adjust during the swim. I have some of the problems others have mentioned occasionally, like readings that are WAY off, but it does not often and it's pretty clear that it's off. I check it from time to time against my fingers and watch and find it to measure a similar rate as I calculate. I do wish it had a charge level meter - it ran out of juice near the beginning of my sets and doesn't have much charge left after it notifies you. I also find that I somehow knock the clip off my ear (or at least so it no longer reads correctly) with some frequency when I'm running at race pace. Still, I'm definitely glad I splurged.

I returned this monitor to SwimOutlet.   If you want to try your luck with this, I suggest keeping your receipts and original packaging for a possible return.   Here's my experience:

On land, tested against a manual heartrate count and a Timex Run Trainer, the Aquapulse registered a rate that was commonly 20-30 beats per minute different.  There was no such discrepancy between the manual count and the Timex count.

In the water, during a workout when my manual pulse rate (counting for 6 seconds and multiplying by 10) repeatedly registered in the 150 bpm range,  the Aquapulse wouldn't budge above 110 bpm, even after adjusting the ear contact.

Even when not locked into that strange 110 bpm ceiling, the Aquapulse count  tended to be erratic, frequently swinging widely up and down.  And the ear clip comes off sometimes.

I wish it worked, but mine certainly didn't.
