Our story begins back in 1997, when Martin and I first met as Product Design students at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA. We maintained our sanity through the grueling design program by surfing in the purifying waters of Malibu and nourishing ourselves on Korean BBQ. These moments of stoke sparked a life-long friendship. After graduating, we went our separate ways and went on to design snowboard boots and wetsuits for the best brands in board sports. Ten years later, we happened to simultaneously relocate to the San Francisco Bay Area. As designers, we saw an incredible opportunity to collaborate and create something new. As humans, we wanted to make a positive difference in the world. We committed to doing both, and Freewaters was born.
We believe that access to clean drinking water is a fundamental human right! And while the global drinking water pandemic is a complex and serious issue, our approach is simple and not so serious. We design easy-going casual footwear that transports you into vacation mode the minute you slip them on. Each pair helps provide clean drinking water to those in need though our grassroots water projects. Based in California, Freewaters soaks up the west coast spirit of cruising down the open road and spreading good vibes. Our mantra is do some good – a call to make the world a better place, little by little, step by step. Every pair has a story, a human story. So join us and together we can help redefine footwear as a tool for good.
